Psychopharmacologic Management in the Geriatric Psychiatry Patients
Kee Baik-Seok

Abstract
The psychotropic drug used in the geriatric psychiatry is not able to delay or arrest the deterioration of neurons, but improve the mental symptom in the aged at present. Age related body changes may alter the response of the older patient to a psychotropic drug. In most cases, age-related changes result in reduction of clinical effect, increase in toxicity, and prolongation of both clinical and toxic effect. Therefore, the dosages employed are generally one-half of the conventional adult dose. Because the aged are vulnerable to anticholinergic effect, sedation, and orthostatic hypotension of psychotropic drug, small dose of high potency anti psychotic drug is useful to the psychotic elderly patients.
